Virtual Events

Accessibility

Communication Access Realtime Translation (CART) captioning is provided at all virtual events and covers the full 90 minutes of structured programming plus 90 minutes of unstructured social time. DM3P can provide other accommodations upon request. Please submit all accommodations requests to info@disabilitymedmentors.org at least 7 days prior to the event you plan to attend.

Terms of Participation

We ask that all members who attend our virtual events follow these guidelines:

Communicate with Empathy and Respect. Members should be empathetic and respectful when talking to and about each other. This includes respecting each other’s chosen identities and self-descriptors and refraining from forcing one’s opinions onto other members.

Maintain Confidentiality. Any personal information disclosed during DM3P-sponsored events, spaces, or social media groups should remain confidential, unless the individual has given permission for it to be shared. Members can also withdraw consent for others to share their personal information at any time.

Share Airtime. Members should try to give everyone a chance to speak and refrain from dominating conversations. General guidelines include keeping comments to 1-2 minutes and encouraging others, especially quieter members, to join in.

Be a Good Disability Ally. Members should defer to the voices of community members who have a disability. Allies who have not adopted a disability identity should aim to center, rather than talk over, speak for, or discount, disabled community members. Members who have a disability should also practice good allyship to people with different conditions or lived experiences.

Honor Diverse Needs. Members should honor each other’s diverse needs, lived experiences, and unique reasons for being part of DM3P.

Be Open to Feedback. DM3P is a mentorship program, not a support group, so members should be open to receiving advice when sharing their experiences during events. This is a space for learning and growing together, so members should refrain from using it to vent in a prolonged way.

Speaking Opportunities

If you wish to speak at an upcoming virtual event, please fill out DM3P’s speaker application. Non-DM3P members are eligible to apply. We especially welcome applicants who are disabled health professionals and trainees.

Monthly Events – regular gatherings focused on learning, networking, and community engagement.

Virtual Events

DM3P hosts monthly events over Zoom that feature didactic presentations by guest presenters, interactive participation by audience members in small and large groups, and unstructured social time for networking and fellowship. These events are usually held on the third Wednesday evening of the month. Events are open to registered members of DM3P and are free of charge.

Event Structure and Features

Structured Programming:

Each virtual event consists of 90 minutes of structured programming, which is devoted either to an educational session or to moderated networking time.

Educational Sessions:

Educational sessions are didactic presentations in which guest lecturers or well-established DM3P community members share knowledge and skills concerning how to thrive in medicine with a disability. Past topics have included disability disclosure, self-advocacy, clinical accommodations, the history of medical ableism, and many others. These sessions are often highly interactive, with opportunities to reflect on presented material in small and large groups or to ask the presenters questions.

Moderated Networking Time:

DM3P community leaders facilitate structured opportunities for members to meet new people, share advice, and engage in fellowship. This most often occurs through small group engagement of discussion questions, moderated large group conversations, or both.

Unstructured Social Time:

Optional unstructured social time is offered immediately before (30 minutes) and after (60 or more minutes) the structured programming. Conversations are usually unmoderated, although DM3P leadership team members participate alongside community members. This social time is an excellent way to meet other health professionals with disability, troubleshoot problems encountered during medical training or practice with a disability, and identify suitable mentoring partners.

Eligibility

Virtual events are open to registered members of the DM3P community. To protect the privacy of community members, these events are closed to the public. However, the didactic portions of these events will be made publicly available on YouTube.

Attendance at virtual events is optional and is not a requirement for membership in the DM3P community. Members may attend as many or as few events as desired, and partial attendance at most events can be readily accommodated to fit the schedules of busy health professionals.

Acknowledgments

All monthly virtual events are co-hosted and sponsored by the Stanford Medicine Alliance for Disability Inclusion and Equity (SMADIE).
