Event Description
The theme of the meeting is Reimaging medical education and practice: An introduction to crip futurity with Neera R. Jain, PhD, MS, CRC, Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Centre for Health Education Scholarship, University of British Columbia Faculty of Medicine. Much of how we talk about disability inclusion in medical education has focused on ways to get by within the system we currently study and work in. In this session, Dr. Jain will make an argument for dreaming differently, for imagining ways to transform the system. Operating with lenses of justice and anti-ableism, she will demonstrate why our current focus is insufficient. She will offer another way to think, using the disability studies concept of “crip futurity,” that calls us to imagine the present and future differently in order to transform both. Together, we will open a space for collective dreaming: to imagine a possible future for medicine where disabled people thrive, which has the potential to shift our present conditions. This vision can direct us towards a new goal that we can activate together.
