DM3P was selected as a winner of the UCLA Health Equity Challenge. As part of this achievement, the grant proposal writer discussed the project titled “Patient Training Program to Empower Autistic Patients in the Emergency Department” and focused on how we can leverage our disabilities for better patient care.

Speaker Bio

Mami Horikawa

At the time of this presentation, Mami Horikawa was a medical student at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. She earned her PhD in Chemistry from the University of Michigan, where she developed PET imaging tracers. While inspired by the potential of advanced medical imaging, she became concerned about its accessibility and its potential to exacerbate health disparities. Motivated to bridge the gap between innovation and equitable care, she aspires to become a physician-scientist in Emergency Medicine/Medical Toxicology. She also serves on the DM3P Internal Communication Team, where she supports health professionals in finding resources and leveraging their strengths to navigate their careers in medicine.
