Event Description

Haunting evokes the things and entities that lurk and remain unaddressed. Haunting helps us understand how forms of discrimination and indignities persist and why numerous -isms, -phobias, and -normativities remain entrenched. The haunted curriculum allows us to explore how learners in a range of disciplines and specialties encounter, reflect, and learn from the forms of oppression they encounter. Drawing from a range of health professions education examples, including psychotherapy for refugees and immigrants, simulation training, and under-recognized medical students, this interactive presentation in three parts will examine how the haunted curriculum unfolds in a variety of settings.

Speaker

David Ansari is an assistant professor in the Department of Medical Education at the University of Illinois College of Medicine, and faculty affiliate in the Center for Global Health and Department of Anthropology at the University of Illinois Chicago. A medical and cultural anthropologist, David is interested in experiences of belonging in mental health and end-of-life care. His book, The Haunted Curriculum: Orchestrating Mental Health Care and Belonging in France, is an ethnography of mental health clinics for immigrants and non-francophone populations, and the lived experiences of the health professionals and students in these clinics. His new project examines how end-of-life professionals, including clinicians and chaplains, support the extra-clinical needs of patients and their families.
