Event Description

This presentation was about how Dr. Dominic Herda navigated through his education and career with a visual impairment, Blue Cone Monochromacy. He discussed the impact that his visual impairment had on his early education through his residency. The Americans with Disabilities Act came into effect while he was in medical school. He discussed how that benefitted him then and also presented about his practice of medicine as an attending and how he had to change his practice significantly due to deterioration in his vision later on.

Dr. Dominc Herda received his BS in Psychology with a Biology Emphasis from the University of California, Davis in 1988.  He received his MD from the University of North Dakota School of Medicine in 1992 and completed residency in Psychiatry at the University of California, Davis Medical Center Department of Psychiatry in 1996. In the past 30 years he has held many different positions in many different organizations. He was chief resident, a county mental health medical director, a medical center department chief and three times a medical center psychiatry department assistant chief. He has specialized in the treatment of the SPMI (Severely and Persistently Mentally Ill) patient population. Dr. Herda currently has been enjoying partial retirement as a clinic staff psychiatrist for Turning Point Community Programs TSS clinic in Sacramento, California.
