Meeting Description:

Please join us on Wednesday, September 18th from 5:00–6:300 PM PST, for the monthly virtual Disability in Medicine Mutual Mentorship Program Meeting. Drs. Peter Bulova and John Harris will share the history of the UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital Center for Women with Disabilities. Starting in 2001 with Dr. Sandra Welner, the clinic has provided accessible care for people with disabilities. They will describe the clinic facilities, staff, and related clinics that make it successful. They will describe the services provided, including health education services. They will discuss some of the research collaborations that have grown out of their clinical work. Next, they will discuss several clinical scenarios that they often see and how they navigate various competing needs and risks.

Speaker Bio:

John Harris is an Ob/Gyn, health services researcher, and Co-Director of the UPMC Magee-Women’s Hospital Center for Women with Disabilities with Dr. Bulova since 2019. His research has been funded by NICHD, NIA, NIDILRR, and AHRQ.
Dr. Bulova is a Professor of General Internal Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh.  He has worked at the Magee Center for Women with Disabilities for 20 years as a general internist.  He is past president of the Down Syndrome Medical Interest Group and speaks nationally on the care of adults with Down syndrome, as well as statewide on caring for women with physical and intellectual disabilities.  He teaches medical students, residents and fellows at the University of Pittsburgh as a member of the University’s Academy of Distinguished Educators.  He is an ad hoc reviewer for the Journal of Intellectual Disability Research, and the American Journal on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities, and the New England Journal of Medicine.

  • Presentation by Dr. Bulova and Dr, Harris (20 minutes)
  • Audience discussion and Q&A for the rest of the meeting (55 minutes)
